In 1998, I attended the Scherer Institute of Natural
Healing in Santa Fe, NM for 9 months and studied 750
hours to become a Licensed Massage Therapist. I then
studied in a workshop with Carole Osborne Sheets to
receive certification in Pre and Perinatal Massage
Therapy. I began an apprenticeship with two midwives-
Seva Khalsa, LM, CPM and Tanja Bolle, LM, CPM in Santa
Fe soon after completing massage school. This was a 2
year apprenticeship in which I experienced many
homebirths and also received an experiential
understanding of the entire childbearing year. In my
third year studying birth, I attended Maternidad La Luz
Midwifery School and Birthing Clinic where I completed
my studies and became a Certified Professional Midwife.
During these years I attended 160 births. Currently I
have been practicing full time Mothering with my two
beautiful sons, ages 5 and 1. The gift of being a mother
has allowed me to deepen my connection and understanding
of the childbearing year. I believe this time period is
the special beginning of a much bigger journey… the
journey of mothering.
The childbearing year is a time that I deeply resonate
with. The birth of a baby is a full and demanding time
of life which needs support to foster peace, grace, and
ease for the entire family. If thoughtful care and
nurturing can be given to the postpartum time it is a
way to honor the mother’s well being and the sacred new
beginning of a baby’s life. Intentional support ensures
the mother’s recovery from the birth. Placenta
Encapsulation is one way to support mothers (thus babies
and families) during the postpartum time. Educating
people about the viable health benefits from the
placenta to aid in the whole well being of the
postpartum mother is thrilling to me. This progressive
option in postpartum wellness is one that all women (and
health care providers) should be informed of and have
the choice to utilize. The placenta is an extraordinary
organ and, if prepared properly, has much to give back
to the mother after the birth. It can give new mothers
emotional balance hence preventing “baby blues”, more
energy, and promote lactation. I am excited about being
a Placenta Encapsulation Specialist in Santa Fe (and
surrounding areas in NM) and to be in service with this
time period that I honor and love.
